Five Easy Pieces (1970) In-Person, Film Discussion Group

John Perkins will lead our November discussion. John notes that Five Easy Pieces, like its meandering lead character Bobby Dupea (played by Jack Nicholson), defies being pinned down.

Dupea rejects what might have been a promising career as a concert pianist, picks up and abandons women with abandon, and perhaps comes too late to the realization that he might begin to sort himself out by reconciling with his demanding father.

Five Easy Pieces fits what James Agee said about Sunset Boulevard: “It is one of those rare movies … that can be talked about, almost shot for shot and line for line for hours on end.”

Now, 56 years later, bring your take on this fascinating film and join us for the conversation.

Description

Five Easy Pieces

with John Perkins, Ph.D.

Our next official film presentation and discussion will take place on December 12. Watch for more details soon as we finalize the venue.

In the meantime, in the spirit of continuing these conversations, we’re organizing  informal film discussion evenings at the library at Good Shepherd Center. These evenings will be informal and conversational, with plenty of room for different perspectives and observations. Please note that watching the film beforehand is required in order to participate in the discussion.

Space is limited to 8 participants. Please RSVP if you’d like to attend—first come, first served.

Date: November 12, 2026

Time: 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Location: Good Shepherd Center, Nancy Alvord Library / C.G. Jung Society, Seattle Library
